Loss Of Innocence

From Skully's Official Website

Skully's Grandmother and students. Meenies School. IrelandThis piece of music is dedicated to anyone who had their childhood taken from them by an adult, and was forced to grow up too quickly.

I met someone recently who said to me "Your Grandmother inspired me to become a teacher"

When I probed further she told me this story : "On rare occasions when there was a function where all the schools would come together, other classes would line up like the military and stand to attention beside their teachers. Then the door would open at the end of the large hall, and Elizabeth (My Grandmother) would shuffle in, Her little group of children clinging to her skirt seeking comfort in this frightening foreign environment".

My Grandmother always said "never put a child into a situation where He/She must lie" " It is not necessary to raise your voice or your hand to a child" She taught in Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s.

Today when we hear about the abuse of children by Catholic priests in Irish institutions we are often told "they were different times"
Dare I say : They were different times for some. Even animals care for their young!
On Irish National radio we are still subjected to the Angelus Bell ringing at 6.00pm. When ever I hear it, my thoughts go out to the victims of clerical child abuse.

The SCENT OF A MOMENT for this music is polished wax, and disinfectant that hung in the air of these dreadful institutions.
